Our Coaches

John Fruttero

John Fruttero is a highly passionate, fun and process-driven coach who loves tennis, and motivates players to maximize their potential. Like his coach/mentor Jose Higueras, he focuses on balance, footwork, strategy, aggressiveness, and attitude. As a very analytical person. he utilizes video, journaling and developmental planning to teach players tennis and life lessons.

His experience extends much beyond tennis, as John firmly supports educational goals, himself being a full-scholarship Wharton graduate in Finance and Entrepreneurial Management while simultaneously playing D1 tennis. His extraordinary journey led him to  work at Goldman Sachs until he finally devoted his life to coaching tennis.

He has been involved with the pro-tennis scene for decades, having been a part-time coach of 12 ranked ATP and 2 WTA Ranked Professionals. His resume of coaching juniors is just as comparable - coaching 8 top #15 national juniors during his time in Pasadena, to recent success coaching The Harker School's girls team to their second CCS championship and first CIF championship in program history.

Our Club

Welcome to Fruttero Tennis Academy

For over 38 years, as internationally-renowned coaches/players and academically successful college graduates (U Penn, UC Berkeley, and USC Masters), Coach JP and Coach John have whole-heartedly lived out and expressed the value of building character and teaching life lessons through sport. This special scholar athlete journey is further modeled by the academy’s assistant coaches that currently include students/graduates of Stanford, U Penn, Cornell, Northwestern, Rice, and Berkeley (PhD). An example of prioritizing the balance of academics and sport is shown in the brothers’ success developing the South Bay’s most dominant coed middle school tennis program and the nation’s #3 ranked high school girls team that captured the Nor Cal Team Championships.

For decades, the brothers learned from the world’s best coach, Jose Higueras, who managed USTA National Player Development since 2008 and also coached former world #1 players: Federer, Sampras, Courier, Chang and Bruguera. This foundation helped both to compete nationally/internationally with Coach JP reaching the #1 ranking in juniors, #4 in college and #83 on the ATP pro tour playing all of the Grand Slams (still competing at #338 ATP). The brothers remain on the cutting edge by coaching elite players and attaining many top internationally-recognized certifications.

Just since moving to the Bay Area in 2011, the Fruttero brothers have been the chosen gurus to a Who's Who list of Northern California's top juniors that have been crowned NorCal Junior Champions in their respective age groups over a dozen times, many more NCAA collegiate players (including two playing at Stanford and two at Berkeley last year), and dozens ATP/WTA professionals, including Ivo Karlovic (ATP #14 with a winning record over Djokovic), Mike Russell (ATP #60) and China's, Korea's, Taiwan's, Indonesia's, and the Philippine's #1 ATP pros!

Why Us

All Levels are Welcome

Programs are suited for all ages and levels of competition tailored to each individual's current progress. We offer various classes for 4 levels, each with a different type of tennis ball - red, orange, green and yellow balls. Younger or less experienced students often hit the lighter red and orange balls, and will be able to progress into the green and eventually traditional (yellow) balls with more experience.

Whether you are a parent looking to start your child on tennis early, an adult looking to begin or improve your game, a competitive athlete seeking to climb rankings, or just simply a tennis enthusiast, we have a program for you.

1

Red Ball

Light enough for the youngest children or entry level players to hit, red balls usually on 36' by 18' courts, and work well with lightweight racquets (23”)

2

Orange Ball

Higher bounce and flying faster than red, orange balls are usually played on 60' by 18' courts, and also work well with lightweight racquets (23"-25”)

3

Green Ball

The next progression, and for some players to start competing with, the faster green ball uses standard 78' by 27' courts, and also work well with racquets (25"-26”).

4

Yellow Ball

For more experienced students and competitive players, traditional yellow balls are played on standard 78' by 27' courts with racquets (27"-29")

Our Mission

CALM. ENGAGED. COMMITTED.

Our mission is to impart life lessons through the medium of tennis while emphasizing the significance of character development. We strive to cultivate lifelong habits within our students, instilling principles like maintaining "dynamic stillness" on the court or adopting healthy snacking off the court. By challenging students to perform under pressure, training an unwavering engagement during matches and practice, and nurturing a strong work ethic, we aim not only to propel them towards success in tennis but also to prepare them for more bravely facing life.

Drawing upon our one-of-a-kind coaching experience, we are dedicated to helping students achieve their aspirations. Whether their ambitions involve reaching the next level in tennis, following in the footsteps of our top-ranking juniors, college athletes, and ATP pros including our own Coach JP, or using tennis as a pathway to esteemed universities like Stanford, UPenn, Cornell, and Berkeley, following our esteemed Coach John, a Wharton graduate and USC Masters, our Academy fosters the necessary skills and values to pave the way toward attaining those goals.
